Russians Named Top 3 Favourite Theatre Performances

Specialists from the All-Russian Public Opinion Research Centre (VTsIOM) conducted a study dedicated to the 245th anniversary of the Bolshoi Theatre. Based on the results of the study, experts presented the data on the population’s attitude towards theatres.

It turned out that before the introduction of the self-isolation regime, every third Russian went to the theatre at least once a year (34 per cent). It is interesting that there are more fans of theatrical performances among residents of capitals (58 per cent) and million-plus cities (54 per cent). Also, the share of theatre lovers is higher among women (43 per cent) and young people 18-24 years old (40 per cent).

After the restrictions were lifted and the self-isolation regime was cancelled, already 10 per cent of Russians managed to visit the theatre, and these were mostly those who went to the theatre before the introduction of the self-isolation regime. Those were more often Russians aged 18-34 (15-16 per cent).

It is noted that the Bolshoi Theatre became the favourite theatre of Russians. Also in the top 3 were the Mariinsky Theatre and the Gorky Moscow Art Theatre. In addition, the top 3 favourite performances of Russians over the past two-three years included “The Nutcracker”, “Swan Lake”, and “The Master and Margarita”.
