Yamal livestock farmer, Simon Vasiliev, is going to revive a rare breed of northern animals — the Russian decided to restore the population of the Priobsky native horses and make them a brand of Yamal.
“The primary task is to re-examine the livestock of the Priobsky breed of horses and its crossbreeds, collect genetic material and send it to Moscow to confirm our breed,” Vasiliev said, explaining that seven such individuals should be transferred to him.
The breeder has been breeding horses in Yamal for eight years — the man owns the agricultural consumers’ cooperative “Priobsky Horse”. Vasiliev noted that the animals are hardy and adapted to very cold weather, have an easy-going nature and are not picky in nutrition. Animals are actively used in hippotherapy — rehabilitation with the help of adaptive riding and communication with horses, aimed at people with disabilities and development. Currently, the animals are kept on the territory of the Ingilor Nature Park.
The Priobsky horse is widespread on the territory of the West Siberian Plain in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug – Yugra. The farmer is confident that the development of horse breeding will allow developing tourism in the region, create additional jobs, and contribute to the promotion of equestrian sports. In the near future, the agricultural cooperative is planned to expand — thanks to grants, stables will appear in the village of Muzhi in the Shuryshkarsky district and in Salekhard.
