Russia’s Prosecutor General’s Office Demands Recognizing Meta Extremist Organization

The Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation has sent an application to the court to recognize Meta Platforms Inc. as an extremist organization.

According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, in connection with the special military operation conducted by the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation to protect the DPR and LPR, “information materials containing calls for violent actions against citizens of the Russian Federation, including military personnel, are distributed on the Instagram social network, and information containing calls for citizens to participate in mass riots accompanied by violence is also systematically posted.”

“In accordance with the Federal Law On Countering Extremist Activities, the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation has sent an application to the court to recognize Meta Platforms Inc. as an extremist organization and ban its activities on the territory of the Russian Federation,” the Prosecutor General’s Office said on March 11.

In addition, “due to the presence of signs” of propaganda of terrorism and paragraph incitement of hatred and enmity with the threat of violence, materials were sent to the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation to resolve the issue of criminal harassment.

After Facebook and Instagram announced they will lift the ban on calls in posts to violence against the Russian military, the State Duma asked the Prosecutor General to evaluate this Meta decision, and the Russia’s Media and Communications Supervisor (Roskomnadzor) demanded a prompt response from the company regarding the new content moderation rules. The Prosecutor Office asks Roskomnadzor to restrict access to Instagram thus.

The Prosecutor General’s Office recalled that earlier the Facebook social network was “found to be involved in violations of fundamental human rights and freedoms, the rights and freedoms of citizens of the Russian Federation, which guarantee, among other things, freedom of the media.” Based on this decision, Roskomnadzor is already restricting access to Facebook.
