The Pushkin State Institute of the Russian Language named “heritage” the word of the year, according to the official page of the institution in the VK social network.
“Everyone has been waiting for this moment for a very long time, and now it has come! The Pushkin Institute is ready to name the word of the year. This word is ‘heritage’,” the publication says.
The Institute noted that in these difficult times, the idea of rethinking the historical past seems important to understand the path along which one should move.
“It is no coincidence that the outgoing year was declared the Year of Cultural Heritage of the Peoples of Russia,” the authors believe.
They recalled that this year the anniversaries of many outstanding statesmen, scientists, artists, writers, directors were celebrated: Peter the Great, Korney Chukovsky, Admiral Wrangel, Andrei Tarkovsky, Igor Severyanin.
“We continue to preserve and cherish the legacy that these great people have left us,” the institute concluded.
During the evaluation of the lexicon, experts relied on both quantitative and qualitative methods. Among the sources providing statistical information, Wordstat.yandex was used, as well as the Medialogia analytics system and the Integrum database. According to Medialogia, 1,071,509 messages containing the “heritage” unit were published in 2022. Wordstat in the first positions shows such queries as “cultural heritage”, “heritage object”, “heritage of Russia”, “world heritage”, “year of heritage”.
A meaningful analysis of publications shows that the appeal to the historical and cultural heritage of the country has acquired special significance this year. The unit worked on such concepts as “history”, “historical memory”, “national heritage”, “loyalty to traditions”, “national identity”, and “continuity of generations”.
