Sber Headed Russian Banks List in World’s Top 150 for Accepted Card Payments

Seven Russian banks entered the world top 150 in terms of the number of accepted card payments, with a total share of almost 10 per cent in the rating. Thus, the share of the largest Russian acquiring banks in the list in 2020 was 9.7 per cent, which reflects the share in the total number of non-cash payments processed through POS terminals.

In the list of Russian organizations, the most significant change is observed in Sberbank, which processed 30.3 billion payments. In 2019, this figure was 20.6 billion. The bank’s position in the rating itself has not changed, it retains the third place, behind the global acquiring company FIS (34.2 billion processed payments) and the American JPMorgan Chase (35.6 billion payments).

The second largest Russian bank, VTB, in 2020 reduced the number of processed transactions and went down from 35th place in the world ranking to 41st (1.8 billion card payments and 2.2 billion in 2019). Gazprombank also dropped in the ranking, from 59th to 61st place, but at the same time increased the number of accepted non-cash payments from 0.93 billion to 0.95 billion.

In turn, Tinkoff Bank ranked 84th with 0.39 billion accepted transactions, and in 2019 it was 88th with 0.37 billion payments. The Russian Standard has risen from 89th place (0.35 billion transactions) in 2019 to 86th (0.36 billion transactions) in 2020. Promsvyazbank took 96th place and 0.28 billion payments last year, and 103rd place and 0.24 billion payments in 2019. Alfa-Bank ranked 132nd out of 150, having processed 0.14 billion payments (135th place and 0.12 billion transactions in 2019).
