The Russian Embassy in Madrid, Spain, has condemned a protest of the ‘NUEVA VIDA’ NGO that while trying to protect human rights offended the Russian community by placing billboards with inappropriate content in cities nationwide, RT reports. As part of a campaign, the banners list drugs and young Russian women for sale.
The adverts were posted last week to mark World Day Against Trafficking in Persons on 23 September. They were made in form of a restaurant whiteboard offering a special dish of “Russian virgins and cocaine”. Other listings include “Katia, 17 years old”, “Sophia, 20 years old”, and some others for €50 each. In addition, potential “clients” are also offered to smoke drugs for an extra fee. According to the organisation’s website, all banners were created in collaboration with students from the CESINE University Centre, Sputnik reports.
The organization that placed the ads, Asociación NUEVA VIDA, describes itself as the one aimed at “abolishing prostitution” and putting an end to the exploitation of trafficked women. However, the apparent reference to the stereotypes about Russian women has drawn a furious response from the country’s embassy in Spain.
In a statement issued by the Russian Embassy on Monday, Moscow’s envoys said that their compatriots living in Spain are outraged by the PR-stunt from the NGO, sharing online the placement of provocative banners on the street, mentioning Russian girls as part of the campaign to bring attention to the problem of prostitution in the country. The diplomats called the advert “inappropriate” and demanded that authorities “take urgent measures to eliminate the posters and prevent further such incidents”.
“We will inform you about the results of the work done,” the embassy promised.
Besides, activists have already launched a petition on Change.org to denounce the campaign for “Under the Auspices of Fighting Prostitution They Called Russian Women Prostitutes in Spain”. The plea has already gathered 1,279 signatures and is rising the number literally every second.
