Swedish Armed Forces Simulated War During Russian Military Exercise

During the Russian exercises “Zapad-2021” (“West-2021”), the Swedish military simulated a war situation: one of the Swedish submarines received an unexpected order to meet at sea with a support ship and take on board combat torpedoes. In such a way Swedes rehearsed actions in case the enemy defeated all the coastal bases of the fleet.

As specified, the secret operation of the military was carried out in September and has been kept confidential till today, when the leadership of the Swedish Armed Forces decided to disclose it to the public.

The submarine HMS Uppland, which conducted underwater reconnaissance in the Baltic Sea during the Russian military exercises, was ordered to go to the meeting point near the coast of Östergötland. There, combat torpedoes were preloaded in the open sea on the HMS Pelikanen ship and under cover of the night transferred to the submarine.

According to Sputnik (with reference to SVT), the Head of Emergency Preparedness of Sweden, Lieutenant Colonel Adam Camél, noted that “normally, the submarine goes to the quay in the city of Karlskrona to load new torpedoes but this time” they “did it from a more tactical place”.

At that time, Swedish Defence Minister, Peter Hultqvist, claimed that the Russian military exercise “affected Sweden’s entire surroundings”. He later called the exercise a “demonstration of strength” showcasing Moscow’s “extensive military capability”.

As stated, this sudden test of the country’s combat capabilities was just one of several conducted by the Swedish military during Russian exercises, including the gathering of ground troops in Action. This week, the Swedish Navy has already begun large-scale exercises “SWENEX-21” and on Thursday, the Air Force of the country will start its annual air defence exercises.
