The Day of the Military Intelligence Officer is a professional military holiday of Russia, established by the order of the country’s Minister of Defence in 2000. On this day in 1918 in Petrograd (nowadays St. Petersburg), as part of the Field Headquarters of the Red Army, a Registration Department was formed to coordinate the efforts of all intelligence agencies of the army.
Currently, the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Russia is the foreign intelligence agency of the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation and the central intelligence agency of the Armed Forces of the country.
For the courage and heroism showed in the performance of special tasks to ensure national security, more than 700 military intelligence officers were awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union and Hero of the Russian Federation.
Military intelligence itself, as an element of the national security system of the state, extracts, analyzes, summarizes information about the military-political situation that is developing around the country, predicts its development, and promptly reports on the situation to the highest political leadership about potential threats to national interests and country’s security.
As specified, military intelligence includes both operational and technical units, as well as information-analytical and support structures equipped with modern means created on the basis of the latest achievements in the field of information, telecommunications, space technologies and innovations.
