Two members of the US Congress who are also the leaders of the Helsinki Commission have introduced a resolution demanding that the US not recognize Vladimir Putin’s victory in the upcoming presidential elections in 2024. They claim that only violations in Russia’s elections have kept Putin in power, so his presidency after 2024 would be illegitimate.
“Taking into account that […] the Russian authorities did not invite a sufficient number of international observers, as required by obligations within the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe and the Council, Vladimir Putin’s re-election for another term will be illegal,” the resolution made by the Democratic Congressman, co-chairman of the US Congressional Helsinki Commission Steve Cohen, and his deputy, Republican Joe Wilson, says.
