Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) said that two Russian nationals had been detained on December 27 on the basis of information shared by US partners. The two reportedly planned to commit terror attacks in St. Petersburg during the New Year holidays.
According to the local media, the young men were selecting places for terror attacks. The Kazan Cathedral in the center of the city and the Gallery retail and leisure center near the Moskovsky railway terminal were chosen as scenes of potential terror attacks.
Two Russian nationals are now detained, Nikita Semyonov and Georgy Chernyshev until at least the end of February 2020.
The FSB released footage showing two terrorist suspects being detained in St. Petersburg;
Previously, FSB received a tip-off “from American partners” which allowed the operatives to track the would-be terrorists and thwart their plans.
The successful operation was discussed on the highest level, with Russian President Vladimir Putin thanking US President Donald Trump for sharing the crucial intelligence. The presidents talked on the phone and agreed to carry on cooperation in combatting terrorism.
